Like many Americans I am a seafood lover. Visiting an Ocean To Table seafood house, like Beach Pub in Virignia Beach, is a mainstay of my diet. And of all the shellfish it seems I can never get enough shrimp. So I am naturally fascinated with stories of the biggest shrimp ever caught..or so I thought.
In Search Of Jumbo Shrimp..
Don’t Call Them Shrimp…You May Regret It
Like many Americans I am a seafood lover. Visiting an Ocean To Table seafood house, like Beach Pub in Virignia Beach, is a mainstay of my diet. And of all the shellfish it seems I can never get enough shrimp. So I am naturally fascinated with stories of the biggest shrimp ever caught..or so I thought.
Flippantly I put in the term biggest shrimp ever caught. What the search took me too was a picture of an 18 inch monster known as the Mantis Shrimp that some Florida fisherman wrangled from the Ocean.
Incredible Super Jumbo Plus Shrimp
On first glance I thought wow that adds new meeting to the term jumbo shrimp. In fact, before I even read a word of the article I thought this is one shrimp that does not live up to the name. In fact it is bigger than most crabs and many fish.
But It Wasn’t Actually A Shrimp..??
Turns out it wasn’t even technically a shrimp. Even though it is called the Mantis Shrimp, it is not a shrimp. The 18” monster I was looking it looked like a shrimp on steroids. It is something else though and after reading what it can do, my visions of pool size cups of dipping butter faded.
Mantis Shrimp Is NOT Technically A Shrimp
Turns out this shellfish, which looks like a shrimp your mom should have warned you about, has the ability to fight back to any other undersea school yard bullies. As I read on I was shocked to see that this was one butt kicking shrimp
Mantis Shrimp Violence
Turns out the Mantis Shrimp (Please change this name) can strike with enough force to shatter glass. What? I read on that some of these shrimp have been know to shatter aquarium glass when they have been taunted to by people too foolish to realize you don’t tap the glass bowl of this “jumbo shrimp”.
In fact I pity some fisherman that picks up this breed of faux shrimp and ends up screaming in pain after making the mistake of thinking this was a shrimp at all.
So my dreams of a Jumbo Jumbo shrimp were dashed..
Stick With Real Jumbo Shrimp
In fact I think I will stick with the non violent jumbo shrimp at Beach Pub. Though not as big or aggressive as this Mantis warlord shrimp, a lot easier to catch and much safer
